Frequently Asked Questions
What does the term “Pay For Play” refer to?
“Pay for play” is a term that is being thrown around college campuses nationwide. It is a very controversial topic because it is about college athlete compensation. The debate over whether or not college athletes on scholarship deserve to be paid for their hard work has been going on for quite some time now. There are die-hard proponents for paying athletes for their efforts at school. There are also opponents who think that college athletes are already being compensated more than enough and are very set in their opinions.
Collegiate athletics have always been of amateur status, so why do people want to change that now?
College athletes have always been used as a means of revenue for every college across the nation. Recently though, the revenue that is coming in is far more than what it has been recently and it is showing with higher salaries for big time coaches. Many proponents of this issue are rubbed the wring way and “question why the NCAA, many coaches, and administrators are allowed to earn large amounts of money and the student-athlete is limited to an athletic scholarship” (Schneider). The easy answer is the full-ride scholarships they have received from their respective schools are adequate compensation. Once they realize this, these proponents will quickly come to understand the impossibility of implementing a system like they want to. Also, they will understand why college athletics need to stay amateur so the athletes can realize they are students first and then athletes at school.
How valuable is a full-ride scholarship now days and how would you determine its value?
A full-ride is invaluable now days, especially with the economy still fluctuating. Economy aside though, being able to get a free college education, sometimes worth close to 200-250 grand depending on the school, and coming out of college without any debt is huge. These athletes are coming out of college without debt from student loans and essentially pocketing the money they will be making from their new jobs. That is almost unfathomable.
